Review: Monument To Thieves – S/T
If you’re a socially angry, post-college, generally aggro dude like myself, there’s probably nothing that gets you higher than a band like Rise Against that includes scathing political commentary in their music. The straight forward Hatebreed-inspired hardcore of Monument to Thieves’ new self-titled album nails this particular style, with heavy guitars and rampaging vocals broken up with samples from popular network news channels and interviews with telling clips about some of the social issues ringing true to many people whether it’s gay marriage rights (something we feel so strongly about we designed a t-shirt about it) and even the health care debate.
This disc brings back memories of flying through my old neighborhood in the suburbs trying to piss off the neighborhood with some loud Slipknot or Poison the Well. What sets the band apart from the rest of the screamo-style heavy metal I grew up with is themes that are relatable, on a personal level, to many of the people that I used to piss off. Despite sticking to a heavy metal formula set in stone by acts like Hatebreed and countless others long before them, Monument To Thieves manage to make you drive a bit faster and head bang a bit harder.
Songs like “How Far Can We Fall” and “Just Like Me” are my personal favorites, and will no doubt be the biggest mosh-pit starters on the album. But overall this is one of those albums you have to listen to all the way through, rather than cherry-picking singles, if you really want to enjoy the material to its fullest.
